Best Microfibre Cloth for PPF and Ceramic Coatings

Paint protection film and ceramic coatings do the heavy lifting, but what you touch them with every week matters just as much. The humble microfibre cloth is the difference between a protected surface that stays flawless and one covered in fine swirls.

Why GSM Matters for Microfibre Towels

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and it tells you how dense and plush a towel is. Low GSM towels around 200 to 300 are thin workhorses suited to wheels, door jambs and messy jobs. The mid range around 350 to 450 GSM covers general washing and interior duties, while plush towels of 500 GSM and above have deep, soft fibres that trap grit away from the surface, which makes them the safe choice for paint, film and coated panels. Weave matters too: edgeless or silk-banded towels remove another potential scratch point, and a dedicated waffle weave design holds far more water for drying.

Quick rule: the more delicate the surface and the drier the towel is used, the higher the GSM should be. Buffing a coating or wiping film calls for your plushest towel, not the one that just did the wheels.

Avoiding Scratches on PPF and Ceramic Coatings

Neither film nor coating scratches itself: swirls come from grit being dragged across the surface. A clean, plush microfibre cloth glides on a lubricated panel and pulls dirt up into its fibres instead of grinding it along. To keep it that way, always wash the car first rather than dry wiping, use plenty of lubrication from shampoo or a quick detailer, wipe in light straight lines instead of circles, and fold the towel to a fresh face often. The moment a towel is dropped on the ground, it is done until it has been washed. Protection film has one extra advantage here: its self-healing top layer lets light marks fade with warmth, but the goal is still to avoid putting them there at all. Our paint protection film and ceramic coating aftercare advice comes down to the same principle: soft tools, gentle products, no shortcuts.

Recommended Cloths for Car Care

You do not need dozens of towels, just the right microfibre cloth for each job, kept strictly separate.

Drying

A large waffle weave or plush twist-loop drying towel that soaks up water in one or two passes, so you are never rubbing a damp panel.

Paint, film and coatings

Plush, edgeless towels of 500 GSM or more, reserved exclusively for protected surfaces and detail sprays. Keep several so a fresh one is always ready.

Glass

A low-lint, tighter weave microfibre cloth made for glass leaves windows streak free without smearing product around.

Wheels and dirty work

Cheaper 250 to 350 GSM towels in a distinct colour, so a wheel towel never wanders anywhere near the paint.

Washing and Maintenance Tips

Even the best towel becomes a liability once it is loaded with grit or clogged with fabric softener. A few habits keep every towel in your kit working like new.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should towels be washed?

After every use on paint, film or coatings. A towel that goes back in the drawer dirty carries yesterday's grit straight onto tomorrow's panel.

Can one towel do the whole car?

No. Wheels, lower panels and exhaust areas carry brake dust and heavy grit that must never reach the paint. Separate towels by zone and colour code them so mistakes cannot happen.

What GSM is best for drying?

Look for large, plush drying towels in the 600 GSM and above range, or a quality waffle weave. Both hold plenty of water so you can blot and glide rather than scrub.
